Wait. What the heck is outer outer .space?? |
It’s a work in progress! We* provide opportunities and encouragement to be creative — an infinite act that, wondrously, means something different to each of us — by MAKING, LEARNING, COLLECTING, DOING, and SHARING, online and IRL. Poke around! See what sparks! |

* “We” is me — jordan (she / her). Hi! I live in San Francisco’s Outer Outer Sunset, where the city meets the sea.
* “We” is also a whole constellation of amazing folks — potters and painters, gardeners and artists, writers and musicians — who are so so so generous and inspiring with their ideas and talents and support.

Right Plant, Right Place: A Garden for the Environment Guide to the Art of Growing, Learning, Adapting, Creating, and Thriving (aka Nature’s Knowledge) |
Thursday(s), August 7th and 21st, 2025 1pm to 3pm @ SFMOMA • 151 3rd Street, SF, CA 94103 🌸 buy tickets here! |
As part of the (truly wondrously incredible, please go see it if you can!!) Ruth Asawa Retrospective, SFMOMA teamed up with my beloved Garden for the Environment to do pop ups on a patio adjacent to the gallery, to complement Ruth’s dedication to her own garden and the powerful role of nature in her work and life. The project was almost totally open-ended, with a few key limitations given its location: no soil, seeds, compost, worms, plant matter, or any of the messy things generally used in garden education. How might we facilitate folks to engage with urban nature, without getting their hands dirty? What are some of the core lessons we wanted to share in a fun, accessible way that accommodated a constant flow of people? Together with GFE executive director Maggie Marks and my garden mentor (and good friend!) Carey Craddock, we went heads-down on creating a zine as the foundation of our SFMOMA programming — a takeaway that would offer visitors an introduction to GFE and gardening (in general, and in SF) through a creative lens. Habitat Horticulture set up a fantastic raised bed with plants that Ruth and her husband Albert Lanier grew, so we included drawing and writing prompts to encourage visitors to sit and observe, as well as think about opportunities to use their own diverse passions and talents to connect with others in communities that matter to them. We’ve been at it all summer, and there are still two dates left! When we’re out on the patio, everyone who visits the exhibition is welcome to pop by our pop up! |

We designed this program to welcome everyone to (re)imagine themselves as the gardeners and artists they are, and can be — even / especially the curious but viscerally skeptical who “kill plants” and “aren’t creative.” |
Celebrate community, creativity, and collective growth with Garden for the Environment at an SFMOMA First Thursday! Learn about urban nature and dig in! From hands-on compost demos (worms and all!) and “Ask a gardener” stations to actionable info about our native ecosystems, this is a night to reap new perspectives on how to support our world, and each other. Connect with local orgs and get involved! GFE partners with over 40 Bay Area organizations: city departments, local universities, community gardens and urban forests, neighborhood groups, and more. Meet the folks making it all happen and find your volunteer niche (or career pivot!). Draw, write, create, and share your work! Make yourself comfortable at our big ol’ art table. Pick a medium (crayons, collage, pens, pencils), get inspired by the remarkable flora and fauna found in the diverse gardens of San Francisco, and nurture your imagination. Visitors can also make DIY buttons, and contribute to a communal art project that will be installed at Garden for the Environment. |
